What makes an album cover?

As usual, C-lo and I get into our hip-hop daily conversation usually during one of our commutes to work. This particular evening we sparked a conversation (per my conversation with Cedric and Un) about Hip-Hop album covers and their impact on us, the audience. We ran down a list of covers from "N.W.A.'s - Straight out of Comptom" to Too Live Crew's - As Nasty as I Wanna Be" and what those album did to society, from "A Tribe Called Quest's - Low End Theory" to "Nas' - Illmatic" and on and on.

For me, I remember trying to figure out if I knew all the people on Midnight Marauders album cover, or how long it took me to realize that the Pharcyde was taking a ride into a vagina, or how I hated to see the "Geto Boys - We Can't Be Stopped" cover but loved looking at it.
